SAN ANTONIO (July 11, 2026) — Theta Chi Fraternity is proud to announce Eta Phi Chapter at Oakland University as the recipient of the 2025/2026 David L. Westol Sacred Purpose Award.
Eta Phi was selected for its continued commitment to creating a safer, healthier, and more supportive chapter and campus environment, demonstrating a clear emphasis on looking out for one another and making health and safety education a meaningful part of the chapter.
Eta Phi’s Chapter Adviser, Joshua King (2012), noted that the men consistently met and exceeded the award’s criteria as they exemplified their commitment to one another in challenges that stretched beyond campus.
Throughout the academic year, Eta Phi created meaningful partnerships and engagement opportunities that connected members with healthcare professionals, advocacy organizations, first responders, and alumni experts. These programs brought real-world experience into important conversations about health, safety, prevention, and support.
One example included a Fire and Life Safety program led by Jake Fortenberry (2018), who is a firefighter and EMT. During the program, brothers received practical training in emergency response, first-aid equipment, and tourniquet use, equipping them with skills that could make a difference in a crisis. Another highlight was a campus-wide healthy relationships and sexual misconduct prevention program conducted in partnership with HAVEN, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization in Oakland County, MI, whose mission is to eliminate sexual assault and domestic violence. The program engaged dozens of students in conversations about recognizing warning signs, understanding power and control in relationships, and supporting others.
Eta Phi’s efforts throughout the past academic year reflected a chapter that viewed Sacred Purpose as an opportunity to strengthen brotherhood, support its campus community, and help members better care for one another.
