Theta Chi mourns the loss of Dr. Gary C. Steinhardt (Beta Zeta/Michigan State 1966), who entered the Chapter Eternal on December 12, 2025, at age 81.
Brother Steinhardt served for more than 20 years as Faculty Adviser for Alpha Delta Chapter at Purdue University, mentoring generations of brothers through his example, humor, and commitment to service. Beyond Theta Chi, he devoted nearly 50 years to Purdue University’s Department of Agronomy and completed 30 years of service in the U.S. Army, including service in Vietnam and during Desert Shield/Storm. Whether through soil science, education, veterans organizations, or the Fraternity, Gary lived by a simple philosophy: get involved, be involved, and stay involved.
Following his passing, longtime agricultural journalist Tom J. Bechman reflected on Gary’s life and career for Farm Progress, remembering a friend, educator, veteran, and public servant who never shied away from doing the work that needed to be done. From helping farmers understand soil compaction to creating opportunities for generations of students, Gary’s impact often came through the kind of steady, behind-the-scenes service that rarely seeks recognition.
