At over 110 years old, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the oldest continually operating racetrack in the United States and is known as The Greatest Race Course in the World. With more than 250,000 permanent seats, it is the world’s largest sports-seating facility and hosts the largest single-day sporting event in the world, the Indianapolis 500.

The history of the speedway, specifically one of its owners, Tony Hulman (Delta Pi/Indiana State 1970), is intertwined with Theta Chi. Brother Hulman was an alumnus initiate of the chapter, having assisted the collegians when a fire burned their house down in 1970. He owned a local hotel and arranged for the homeless members to live there and for the fraternity to conduct some of their business there too.

What to Expect:

This experience will focus on preparing you to work in the fields of hospitality, business, and sports management. The Speedway is more than just the track and races. It is an entertainment venue, museum, restaurant, practice facility, and more. You’ll interact with staff at all levels of the business, tour facilities, participate in a mock exercise designed to prepare you for the field, and experience the venue during a live event, TireRack.com Battle of the Bricks, a sports car championship.

Jimmie L. McMillian

Vice President, External Affairs and Senior Corporate Counsel, Penske Entertainment Corp.

Jimmie McMillian proudly serves as Vice President, External Affairs and Senior Corporate Counsel for Penske Entertainment Corp. The company is comprised of INDYCAR, IMS Productions and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race.

As Vice President, External Affairs, Jimmie is engaged in the promotion of our IMS and INDYCAR events, works to build and strengthen community relationships, and partners with a broad number of community organizations to engage fans with our sport.

As Senior Corporate Counsel, Jimmie’s work comprises a variety of legal matters, including managing litigation and legal risks, drafting new event and facility contracts, and vendor and sponsorship agreements.

Jimmie is a graduate of Indiana University – Bloomington and the Robert McKinney Indiana University School of Law. Jimmie proudly serves as a board member for Marion County Public Defender’s Agency, the United Way of Central Indiana, the Indianapolis Urban League and the Miracle Ride. More than a simple hobby, Jimmie also serves as President of 317 Ryders Motorcycle Club. He has served as a leader in local, state, and national bar associations and has served as the Chair of The Racing Attorneys Conference.

Jimmie has shown a tireless commitment to improving the lives of young people and motivating them to succeed despite life’s various obstacles through his outstanding leadership and mentorship of others. As a passionate motorcycle, sports car, and racing enthusiast, Jimmie truly enjoys the ability to live his dream of working at the “World’s Greatest Racetrack.”

Jimmie lives in Indianapolis with his wife Lisa, their four children and five grandchildren.
