John Shertzer, Gamma Kappa/Miami (OH) 1998, was recently elected board president of Indiana Leadership Association, the membership association for organizations providing leadership development throughout the state of Indiana. Member organizations mostly include countywide leadership programs and nonprofit organizations that teach leadership to adults or youth.

“As board president, I will lead a board that collectively represents the interests of the members, and serve as a voice of the organization to the public. I will also lead the board in goal-setting and strategic planning for the organization. Without a paid staff, ILA's board of volunteers is an operational board that also helps to run the organization,” said Shertzer.

Before graduating from Miami in 1998, Shertzer served as Gamma Kappa Chapter President and as the Interfraternity Council President. He was awarded Miami’s Greek Man of the Year award in 1998, as well as the President’s Distinguished Service Medal. After graduation, he traveled for a year as a consultant for the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), helping other Greek communities and IFCs. He then earned his Master’s degree in Higher Education and worked professionally for Iowa State University and the University of Maryland. While at Iowa State, Shertzer served as the resident advisor for Alpha Mu chapter. He also held the position of Vice President of Leadership Education for the NIC, where he coordinated programs including the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI). He served on the Chapter Advisory Board for Gamma Kappa, and on the Leadership Education Committee for Theta Chi. He was a board member for the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity. Shertzer is currently the Chief Programs Officer for Kiwanis International, overseeing Kiwanis's youth service clubs and programs including Key Club International for high school students and Circle K International for college students.

Shertzer resides in Indianapolis with his wife and two sons.
