Photo Guidelines
Add a dimension of depth to your article or chapter news brief by including photos. When shooting and selecting photos, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
General guidelines
- The element of surprise: most of the time, candid photos are more natural and interesting than posed shots
- Leave it alone: avoid editing your pictures in Photoshop or other photo editing software Shoddy post-production can cause an otherwise beautiful image to lose detail, color and appeal. The Rattle editorial staff can and will determine if an image needs additional processing
- Use a flash: believe it or not, good lighting makes a big difference. Always use a flash
- Keep it clean: Do not submit photos of brothers consuming alcoholic beverages, holding up obscene or bizarre hand gestures or otherwise behaving in a way that is unbecoming of gentlemen
Technical specifications
- Ideal resolution: 300 dpi minimum, 600 preferred
- File size: 1 MB or higher
- File format: .jpg or .tif preferred; do not submit photos in .bmp or .gif formats
