Marcus Gibson Receives NIC Undergraduate Award of Distinction
Marcus Gibson (Alpha Phi/Alabama 2015), has been named a recipient of the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Undergraduate Award of Distinction.
This is the most prestigious award that can be presented to a fraternity man in the interfraternal world. The NIC Undergraduate Award of Distinction recognizes a fraternity man who has developed as a leader, and person, striving to embody the values of his fraternity while holding others to the same standard.
Throughout his undergraduate career, Marcus demonstrated a commitment to his academics while maintaining active involvement within Theta Chi Fraternity, among other organizations and clubs on campus. He was consistently recognized on the Dean’s and President’s Lists and was selected as a Capstone Man early into his undergraduate tenure, serving as an official host for the University of Alabama. In 2014 the University’s Order of Omega named him the Outstanding Greek Junior of the Year and in 2015, the Outstanding Greek Senior of the Year. He was also named the Tim Hebson Man of the Year, an award recognizing the most outstanding senior fraternity man at the university.
Throughout his presidency, Marcus challenged his brothers to live up to the ideals of Theta Chi. He led efforts to implement high standards and implement meaningful education programs within the Chapter.
Only one week after he began his presidency, a pledge brother of Marcus, Parker Jordan (2015), tragically took his own life within the chapter house. The loss was devastating, but Marcus tackled a difficult circumstance head-on. He played a key role in organizing a memorial service on campus, and was able to shift tragedy into hope, leading the chapter’s participation in Tuscaloosa’s Out of the Darkness Community Walk, which supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
He has since returned to the University of Alabama to pursue his master’s degree, working as a Graduate Assistant with the Dean of Students. It should also be noted that Gibson was the 2015 recipient of the Reginald E. F. Colley Award, the highest distinction available to Theta Chi collegians.
“Marcus is a role model for all Theta Chi leaders,” explained Executive Director Mike Mayer. “His humble and principled leadership has earned him the respect of many.”
Theta Chi Fraternity is extremely proud of Brother Gibson and his continued commitment to Theta Chi, alma mater, and the greater fraternity movement. You can read more about Marcus Gibson’s accomplishments in the following article announcing his selection as the 2015 Colley Award Recipient.
