Volunteers help welcome over 1,000 students
on Georgia College's Move-In Day
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. -- More than 1,200 first-year and returning Georgia College students are set to move into their new, on-campus homes Thursday.
Officials say students will do this in just three hours, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Hundreds of “Cat Crew” volunteers will be on-hand to help with the work load at the residence halls on the Main and West Campus, according to officials.
“Cat Crew is the ultimate display of Milledgeville and Georgia College’s hospitality where the community and campus come together to welcome the students to town,” said Matthew Terry, assistant director of marketing and communications for University Housing.
Officials say the more than 350 Cat Crew volunteers include campus groups and departments like Athletics, Admissions, Georgia College Early College, Campus Catholics, Baptist Collegiate Ministries and Theta Chi, as well as community members from local churches and organizations.
The volunteers split up into groups at each residence hall and assist with things like unloading and moving the students’ belongings to their room as well as directing the flow of traffic, according to a release.
“I am on year 16 year or so volunteering for Cat Crew,” said Steve Barsby, tennis coach and assistant athletic director. “I enjoy the interactions with the students and their parents, and being a coach of a lot of international players, who most times do not come with parents or family members, I just feel that having parents and students feel welcome makes a big difference to start their college experience.”
Officials say during move-in, Greene Street will become one-way to ease traffic congestion. Access to Greene Street will be blocked from Columbia, Jackson and Tattnall Streets with one entrance from Clarke Street, so you may want to avoid those areas.
