In Memoriam: Brig. Gen. James H. Baker (Gamma Rho/Florida State 1962)
Theta Chi Fraternity is saddened to report the passing of Brig. Gen. James H. Baker (Gamma Rho/Florida State 1962). He attended Florida State University where he was initiated by Gamma Rho Chapter and later transferred to the University of Mississippi where he earned his Bachelors of Science Degree. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard where he retired as a Brigadier General after 38 years. In recognition of his service, we reprint his obituary below.
Brigadier General (Ret.) James Hall Baker, 81, of Jefferson City, passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at his home. He was born on March 8, 1940, in Knoxville, Tennessee, a son of the late Clarence and Laura (Hall) Baker. James was united in marriage to the love of his life, Kathryn Goldworthy on December 27, 1963.
James was a graduate of Ft. Lauderdale High School. He attended Florida State University and the University of Mississippi where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and the Air National Guard where he retired as a Brigadier General after 38 years. During his time, he held positions as the Assistant Adjutant General for Air, Base Commander Jefferson Barracks, Military Commander of the 157th Tactical Control Group, Air Technician Commander, and Executive Support Staff Officer. He held assignments in Thailand, the Republic of Vietnam, Korea, the Dominican Republic, and multiple stateside assignments. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Conspicuous Service Medal, and the Commendation Service Medal, among many others.
James enjoyed playing chess, riding around on his lawn mower, and taking care of his cat, Tubby. Most of all, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his five children: Bret Baker (Kris) of Jefferson City, Sam Baker (Nicole) of Jefferson City, Kim Bujok (Dan) of Bremerton, WA, Sarah Hildebrand (Seth) of Brazito, Susan Baker (Jeremiah) of Brazito; brother: Benny Baker (Bev); grandchildren: Jeremy, Ashley, Zoe, Rhys, Andrew, Ashton, Quinton, Johnathan and Madilyn; and numerous family and friends. James was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jason Doke and Fr. Joe Weber officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Jefferson Barracks on Thursday, April 8, 2021.
