Eighth Annual Theta Chi Golf Outing
Three picturesque and challenging golf courses played host to Theta Chi’s 2016 National Golf Tournament at Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Beautiful spring weather, fellowship, and plenty of seafood highlighted the three day event held April 28 – 30, 2016. Twelve Theta Chi alumni participated.
On Thursday at the Thistle Golf Club, the four man scramble tournament went down to the wire and was decided on a tie breaker. The team of Kevin Krepinevich (Zeta Alpha/Slippery Rock 1976), Chief Financial Officer Jim Powell, Vic Mirmow (Eta Alpha/Clemson 2014), and Mike Kistler (Epsilon Upsilon/Central Michigan 1973), fired a score of 63 including a par putt from the green by Brother Mirmow on the 18th hole. The team of Paul Norstrem (Alpha Pi/Minnesota 1986), Steve Yount (Epsilon Phi/Central Michigan 1972), Phil Bochey (Omega/Penn State 1984), and Pat O’Connor (Chi/Auburn 1978) also finished with a score of 63 but lost on the tie breaker after scores were matched.
On Friday the tournament moved to the Pearl West Golf Club. Brothers Ken Catlett (Nu/Hampden Sydney 1972) and Pat O’Connor (Chi/Auburn 1978), for the second year in a row, took the two-man scramble title with a low score of 75.
In the Championship Tournament on Saturday at the challenging River’s Edge Golf Club, Brother Catlett took medalist honors with a gross score of 84, repeating his 2015 medalist performance at PineHurst, North Carolina.
Brother Warren Hoffman (Alpha Iota/Indiana 1976) won the championship with a gross score of 98/net 70. The last time brother Hoffman took honors at a Theta Chi golf event was the initial year of the tournament in 2009, when he and brother Norstrem won the two man scramble.
The 2017 tournament has already been scheduled for April 27 – 29 at the Barefoot Landing Golf Resort in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mark your calendars!
