Brother Joseph D’Amore (1977), a technical quality analyst for DLA Troop Support, was recently recognized for donating 102 pints of blood in more than 30 years of supporting the American Red Cross. D’Amore donates four times a year and says he does so because others cannot.
According to the American Red Cross website, a donation of one pint of whole blood can save up to three lives. A single platelet donation can provide enough platelets for up to three therapeutic doses for three people in need. Many patients who need platelets have weakened immune systems due to chemotherapy or organ transplants.
Nationally only five percent of the population donates blood and an even smaller percentage donates platelets.
