Brother John Shertzer (Gamma Kappa/Miami OH 1998,) has been selected to receive the Richard H. Sudheimer Interfraternal Leadership Award from Triangle Fraternity. Shertzer will be presented the award on July 15, 2015, at the Triangle Fraternity National Convention in Virginia.

Shertzer was nominated for the award for a blog he writes to discuss fraternal thoughts with today’s college students.

“I started the blog in 2008 when I chose to stop working professionally in the fraternity movement so that I could continue to stay involved in some way.  I never imagined it would gain the readership it has, or that many of my posts would be circulated as widely.  I've been told by many campus professionals that they use many posts for educational purposes with undergraduates, which is the highest honor I could receive for this work,” said Shertzer.  “It's all voluntary and is a labor of love for me, someone who has been an advocate for the power of the fraternity experience ever since I joined Theta Chi 20 years ago,” he added.

As for winning the award, Shertzer had this to say.

“I appreciate Triangle Fraternity recognizing my efforts with this blog.  It's an honor to receive an award from a fraternity with such an outstanding reputation and distinguished history.”

John Shertzer Receives Interfraternal Leadership Award

By Triangle Fraternity

PLAINFIELD, IN. – Triangle Fraternity is pleased to announce that John Shertzer, member of Theta Chi Fraternity, will receive the organization’s Richard H. Sudheimer Interfraternal Leadership Award.  The award is intended to recognize significant contributions by non-members of Triangle Fraternity to the betterment of the interfraternal movement.

The award is named after Richard H. Sudheimer minn52 who represented Triangle successfully for many years in the interfraternal world.  Sudheimer served as a North-American Interfraternity Conference Director and President, and as a North-American Interfraternity Foundation Director and Chairman.  He has also served Triangle as a National Council member, National President, and Triangle Education Foundation Director and Treasurer.  Brother Sudheimer is a recipient of the Triangle Service Key – the highest honor bestowed to a Member – and the NIC Gold Medal.  He is a 1952 initiate of Triangle Fraternity from the University of Minnesota and was retired from the United States Air Force where he worked as an aerospace engineer.  Brother Sudheimer entered Chapter Eternal on December 9, 2014.

John Shertzer is a 1998 graduate of Miami University where he served on the executive board of both Theta Chi Fraternity and the Interfraternity Council.  He worked for the North-American Interfraternity Conference as a Membership Service Consultant, and then attended graduate school at Iowa State University where he earned a master’s degree in educational leadership and policy studies with an emphasis in higher education administration.  After graduate school, worked at Iowa State University and the University of Maryland in student affairs roles.  John returned to the North-American Interfraternity Conference where he served as the Vice President for Leadership Education.  Today, John serves as the Executive Director of the Kiwanis Youth Programs and a member of the senior leadership team of Kiwanis International.

In 2007, John began sharing this thoughts about the betterment of the fraternity and sorority community through a thought-provoking blog that challenges the status quo, poses questions about affiliated members’ choices, and asks the readers what we – members of the larger fraternity & sorority community – are doing to advance the missions, values, and purposes of our fraternal organizations on a daily basis.  John had the foresight to start a blog to discuss his fraternal thoughts with others sensing this would be the way today’s college students would communicate in the future; social media and blogging have replaced face-to-face conversation.  Campus fraternity & sorority professionals often repost John’s blog for their students and alumni advisors to invite them to discuss relevant topics.  Fraternity & sorority headquarters teams often use the blog as a way to keep their staff updated on current trends, and engage discussion among their volunteer boards.  John literally travels the world with his current employer Kiwanis International sharing a message about servant leadership; a theory grounded in the spirit of Triangle Fraternity, Brother Sudheimer, and the award named in his honor.

John is the ninth recipient of this honor.  He joins the ranks of:

2007:  William Jenkins, Phi Kappa Tau
2008:  David Westol, Theta Chi
2009:  James R. Favor, Pi Kappa Alpha
2009:  Sidney Guller, Sigma Alpha Mu
2010:  Meghan Ward-Bopp, Alpha Chi Omega
2011:  Jerry Nelson, Phi Kappa Psi
2013:  Tracy Maxwell, Alpha Omicron Pi
2015:  Donald P. Bennett, Phi Kappa Psi

John will be presented the award on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at the Triangle Fraternity National Convention in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia.
