Extending a Helping Hand to All Who Seek It
The following letter was received by the International Headquarters on August 1, 2019, in regards to the Alpha Iota Chapter at Indiana University. The letter is from the wife of the House Director for Alpha Iota/Indiana.
Dear Theta Chi National,
So often I fear you receive letters complaining about today's youth or the crazy things happening in fraternities across the country. However, today, on the contrary, I am writing to notify you of the wonderful deeds that have occurred at the Alpha Iota Chapter at Indiana University Bloomington! These young men embody the spirit of service, strong character, and compassion that I know the National Chapter seeks to foster.
For the past 2 years, my husband has worked alongside these gentlemen as their Property Management Director. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2018. Somehow the boys learned of this and never failed to offer him kind words and genuine concern and support. On the last day of school in May, several of them came into my husband's office in the frat house and handed him an envelope addressed to our family. Inside the envelope was cash! More than I have ever seen. I was absolutely moved to tears. Those young men took it upon themselves to collect this money (from their own pockets, I fear) and donate it to my family.
We had no idea they had organized such a selfless, generous act of charity. Certainly we have done all we can to thank them here locally, but I really wanted to let Nationals know about this goodness as well. They have demonstrated in words and deeds that the Fraternity's spirit of philanthropy continues to endure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you ALL.
Most sincerely,
Missy Washel
